About the Party

The first day of Port Discovery’s grand opening celebrations last from noon until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14. The museum’s new exhibits will be open and ready for kids all afternoon long. Plus, between noon and 2 p.m., museum visitors will have the chance to participate in interactive performances and check out cool tricks from stilt walker Greg May.

On Saturday, June 16, the party starts at 11 a.m. with a members’ breakfast. At 1:30 p.m., Mother Goose on the Loose will share favorite nursery rhymes with kids, using puppets, illustrations, and songs to engage the younger crowd.

Several times throughout the day, the interactive music experience Tiny Tots Music Time will help infants and young toddlers learn basic rhythm and experience music – and have a blast.

At 3 p.m., an interactive Circle Time, with lots of stories and songs, will spark kids’ imaginations.

What’s New at Port Discovery

Port Discovery’s renovation, which was handled by Lewis Contractors, included the construction of two brand new immersive exhibits.

img-3“The Port” will be a hit with kids of many ages. The exhibit is a huge ship offering opportunities to play pretend – be a captain, sailor, navigator or engineer – and also to learn about how shipping works and how items are shipped across the globe. Kids will even get to operate a gantry crane.

The other new exhibit is a four-story “SkyClimber.” This lets kids climb from a base layer designed to look like it’s underwater, all the way up to “the clouds.” Along the way, they’ll have to solve problems and will be thrilled with nature sound effects.

img-4The SkyClimber is best for older kids, but on the ground level, toddlers will love the soft play area designed for younger age groups.

The construction project also included updates to the lobby and box office area, lunchroom and bathrooms and the addition of a new nursing area and more family seating.

Where to Park

Port Discovery is located at 35 Market Place in downtown Baltimore. When heading there, the best place to park is right around the corner, at Harbor Park Garage. Located at 55 Market Place, the garage is just a few steps away from the museum – an easy walk even with small kids and strollers.

The garage is also a hop, skip and jump from many family-friendly restaurants, like Miss Shirley’s Café, which has a great selection of kids’ meals (including those that are allergen-free) and fun dishes and drinks for parents, too.

Harbor Park is safe, well-lit and conveniently located near I-83 and other routes in and out of the city. The staff, which is available 24/7, is friendly and knowledgeable. They’ll be happy to answer questions about where to go, what to do and how to get there.
