There’s still a chill in the air throughout Maryland – but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stay inside. This February and March, downtown Baltimore offers tons of opportunities to learn, play and have a blast.

Celebrating black history month

Throughout February, there are multiple opportunities to celebrate Black History Month in downtown Baltimore.

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture hosts numerous events throughout the month. On February 1, the museum will screen “Water’s Edge: Black Watermen of the Chesapeake,” with a panel discussion following. February 8 is a free community day for the museum and on February 13, tying into Valentine’s Day, the museum presents Unbreakable Love: The Power of Black Love in Healing and Resistance.

Later in the month, there is an art workshop on February 15 and a film and discussion about Hampton University, on February 22.

On February 8, Port Discovery Children’s Museum hosts Let It Shine, a daylong event featuring programs, activities and art projects highlighting Black history in Maryland.

Supporting port discovery

In addition to its usual lineup of events for kids of many ages, this February, Port Discovery has some special plans in the works for grownups.

On February 1, the museum hosts Hops & Vines, an evening event designed to raise funds to support educational and access programs. The party features local beers and wines – all for a great cause.

Super Bowl Viewing

On Sunday, February 9, Luckie’s Tavern in Power Plant Live! is hosting a big game-watching party, starting at 3 p.m. The event includes $1 pitchers before kickoff, drink deals and themed drinks during the game, and tons of football-friendly food.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, which falls on a Friday this year, is a prime evening to head out to one of the many great restaurants in downtown Baltimore, from Capital Grille to Watertable.

But if a single’s party is more your speed, Power Plant Live! has you covered. On February 14, Power Plant hosts a huge, multi-venue party, including live music from Enslow at Angels Rock Bar, a party at PBR hosted by social media personality Jacqueline Lee, and karaoke at Luckies.

Disney on Ice

February 13-17, Mickey and Company come to Baltimore for a multi-show stretch of Disney on Ice. The show, “Mickey’s Search Party,” features skilled skaters doing stunts and wild acrobatics, all while on skates.

CIAA Returns

The CIAA basketball tournament returns to the CFG Bank Arena in downtown Baltimore this year, starting on February 25 and lasting through March 1. Tickets are now on sale for both men’s and women’s games; individual game passes and all-season passes are both available.

In addition to the games themselves, there are numerous events planned for the tournament week, including educational summits on Health & Wellness (February 27, Reginald F. Lewis Museum), Technology (February 28, Rita Rossi Colwell Center), and Finances (March 1, Rita Rossi Colwell Center).

There are parties planned throughout the week, too, including a kickoff and finale events at Power Plant Live!, each featuring live music, and 21+ parties at Baltimore Soundstage.

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day – March 17 – is on a Monday this year, which means the celebrating will start days before the actual holiday.

On Friday, March 14, Power Plant Live! hosts Shamrocks & Shenanigans, a wild Irish-themed party featuring green beer, photo ops, and live music.

Saturday, March 15, Baltimore Soundstage hosts its second annual St. Pat’s party with Joey Harkum, Daphne Eckman and the Ashley Larue Band.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is always one of the most fun days of the year downtown. This year, the parade takes place on Sunday, March 16. The parade starts at the Washington Monument and travels down N. Charles St. to Pratt St., ending at the Inner Harbor, just before Market Place.

The parade itself kicks off at 2 p.m., but before that, local runners can warm up with the Shamrock 5K, which follows the same route.

Ladies’ Day at the Rita Rossi Colwell Center

On Sunday, March 23, girlfriends can gather at the Rita Rossi Colwell Center on Pratt St. for a fun afternoon of shopping, drinks, food, self-care, and education about fertility resources and support. The event supports the Cade Foundation’s Family Building Grants, which help families with costs related to fertility treatment and adoption.

Famed composer Hans Zimmer, who has created scores for many blockbuster films, including Dune, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Gladiator, and many more, performs at CFG Bank Arena on Friday, February 7.
