On Saturday, June 3, the SoSoSUMMER 17 tour will roll through Baltimore, stopping at for one night at Pier Six Pavilion.
The tour, which features artists from the Lifetime reality show “The Rap Game,” is presented by Jermaine Dupri, who created the show with Queen Latifah.
Dupri has been heavily involved in The Rap Game since its debut on New Year’s Day 2016. But long before that, he was involved in the music industry. He might not have the most famous name in the hip-hop business – but that’s only because he stays slightly behind the scenes, finding stars, collaborating with them and letting them shine.
At ten years old, he danced on stage during a Diana Ross show (thanks to connections made by his father, a talent manager in Atlanta). At twelve, he was a dancer for the hip-hop group Whodini and was featured in their video for “Freaks Come Out at Night.” In his teens, he performed all over the country with acts like Herbie Hancock and opened the New York Fresh Festival with Run D.M.C. and Grandmaster Flash.
Dupri was the mastermind behind a wide variety of famous acts and tracks – he’s the guy behind Kriss Kross and Da Brat and, in 1995, he collaborated with Maria Carey on her hit “Always Be My Baby.” In the late ‘90s, Dupri worked with acts like Destiny’s Child and Usher.
Since then, he has continued to work frequently with Mariah Carey and has partnered with everyone from Weezer to Lil Wayne to Jay-Z.
The SoSoSUMMER 17 tour features Rap Game season one winner Miss Mulatto, season two winner Mani and season three winner Nova Deetrandana, plus other acts like Supa Peach and King Roscoe. The show follows young emerging artists in the hip hop scene.
