Harbor Park Garage Elevates Safety Measures with New Emergency Equipment

At Harbor Park Garage, the safety and security of guests parking at the garage is a top priority. Since its opening, the garage has placed a premium on safety measures like bright lights and having staff members available to help with questions or other needs around-the-clock.

Recently, the garage has taken its commitment to community safety a step further, with the purchase of a Defibtech Lifeline VIEW/ECG automated external defibrillator (AED) and an EV Shield fire safety blanket, which is designed to smother car fires.

The new tools provide additional means for the garage to take care of those who come through its gates. While the Harbor Park staff hopes the need for both will be minimal, having them on hand is reassuring.

Benefits of AEDs

AEDs are medical devices that can be used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The machines are designed to be easy enough for trained non-medical personnel to use – but they can work miracles. After identifying the rhythm of a patient’s heart, AEDs can determine if they need to administer an electrical shock or defibrillation, in an effort to help the heart get back to its regular beat.

Use of an AED buys valuable time for patients in distress. According to the American Heart Association, 9 out of 10 victims of cardiac arrest who receive a shock from an AED within a minute of their cardiac event live – access to AEDs saves lives.

The Lifeline VIEW AED installed at Harbor Park is especially easy to use, as it has a large interactive screen that displays step-by-step visual and audio instructions for CPR and AED use. It is also equipped with pediatric pads and is portable and lightweight, so it can be easily carried to the spot where it is needed.

Warning Signs of a Heat Attack

Don’t wait to get help if you experience any heart attack warning signs. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but others start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Pay attention to your body and call 911 if you experience:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes – or it may go away and then return. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. This can occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs. Other possible signs include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

About Fire Safety Blankets

Fire safety blankets are sheets of fire-resistant material that, when placed over fires, will extinguish them. In a garage, the blankets can be key in the event of vehicle fires. The ability to quickly put out a fire – even before the fire department might be able to make its way to the site – reduces risk of the fire spreading and damage to additional vehicles, the building, and even people in the garage.

The EV Shield blanket uses patented technology to maintain higher temperature resistance and durability than standard fire blankets. It is specifically designed to put out EV battery fires, including those that are in cars, e-bikes and even construction equipment.
