The news cycle has been wild lately. We’ve felt fear, then relief, following the story of the kidnapping (and rescue) of Tennessee girl Carlie Trent. We’ve laughed and rolled our eyes at the announcement that Rob Gronkowski will be on the cover of Madden NFL 17. We’ve devoured every story about Paul Ryan’s meeting with Donald Trump. And we’ve cared way more than we probably should about what’s happening with the cast of Empire.

Add all of that to weeks of rain, with only scant glimpses of the sun, and Baltimore is more than a little punchy.

AquariumSo it’s no surprise that some recent – and very cuddly – news out of our very own National Aquarium has been so well-received. Late last month, the Aquarium announced the birth of Baby Fern, a Linne’s two-toed sloth. Born on April 25, Fern is the sixth two-toed sloth to be born at the National Aquarium and the fourth baby born to her mother, Ivy.

Mom and baby are currently resting behind the scenes of the sloth exhibit, and the Aquarium will keep the public updated, with photos and news, as Fern grows. Right now, she’s tiny and furry and very sweet.

Though Fern and Ivy are resting, the rest of the mammals, native to South America and known for their slow pace and love of sleep, can be spotted in the Upland Tropical Rain Forest exhibit. Sloths are nocturnal and they sleep up to 20 hours a day, so most of the time, visitors will catch them doing what they do best…napping.

TinRoof_logoFern’s birth isn’t the only recent news in the downtown area – there are also plenty of fun activities coming up. On Saturday, May 21, you can pick your dance party decade – rock the 90s at Tin Roof, with the 90’s tribute band As If, or celebrate the new millennium with “Hot In Herre: 2000s Dance Party” at Rams Head Live.

Pier Six LogoLooking ahead to the summer, Pier Six Pavilion is giving jazz fans something to love, with its Jazzy Summer Nights series, including concerts from Jeff Bradshaw and Friends, Rufus Roundtree & Da B’More Brass Factory and DJ Tanz. Tickets are on sale now.

AggioWhether you’re on the hunt for sleepy sloths, in search of nostalgic dance tunes, jazzing it up, or simply out for dinner at Aggio, Family Meal or one of downtown’s other restaurants, Harbor Park Garage is a convenient spot for parking. The garage is located at 55 Market Place, a short walk to the National Aquarium, Power Plant LIVE and tons of restaurants. The garage’s helpful attendants are happy to point you in the right direction and to answer any questions you have about how to get around downtown.
